What Equipment Do I need?

At a minimum you will need:

  • Helmet with chinstrap
  • Three independent sources of light; at least one should mount on your helmet
  • Spare batteries and lightbulbs
  • Good non-marking boots with good tread
  • Cave pack to carry spare gear

Other items you will likely need:

  • Knee and elbow pads
  • Food
  • Water
  • Rugged, grubby clothing

The type and amount of clothing you wear will depend on where you are and what kind of cave you are going to. The following table provides some basic guidelines. For more detailed information on cave types and specific gear, see the guidebook listed to the left. >>More

Where Can I Buy Gear?

Some caving gear, you can purchase at a surplus store, local camping store, or any large retailer with a good outdoor department. For caving and climbing gear, you will likely need to look at one of several specialized retailers. I have provided a list of some of those that have an online presence. Note these links are for informational purposes only and do not necessarily represent an official endorsement, nor have any of these retailers paid to appear on this site.>>More
